Irene Helenowski, the author of “Order of the Dimensions”, is a statistical analyst at an academic medical center in Chicago and recently received her doctorate in biostatistics. She also enjoys going to movies and concerts in her spare time.

Except 1:

Henry started walking toward the office.

          "Ms. Jones? Ms. Jones?" he called out.

          "Bloody hell," Emily gasped. "Hurry, Andrzej! The guard is coming!"

Andrzej took a deep breath before completing the calibrations.

          "All right,everything is in place."  At that moment, Emily saw Henry's

shadow against the entrance of the lab.

          "Good! Now, go!"

          "Wait . . . what about you?" Andrzej asked, turning back to Emily.

          "I'll be fine."

          "Okay," Andrzej said, glancing at her before quickly entering the box.

Excerpt 2:

          The next night, Jane stayed at the lab until just after midnight. She was planning to pack

up and catch the next SafeBus to her apartment when she glanced over to the black door next to the table with the displacedrubber balls from the previous day’s demonstration. She looked around and slowly approached the door. She hesitated for a moment before opening the door, revealing a

5 x 6 x 12 space with a computer mounted on its left wall. After another brief moment of hesitation she entered, closed the door behind her, and approached the small computer.  Running her fingers over the keyboard, she took a deep breath before pressing the power button. The entire space lit up and a soft

humming noise could be heard. The noise became louder before decreasing and the light grew dim.

Excerpt 3:

After the dropped call, Tina tried calling Jane back but was unsuccessful after not having a signal.

          "That's odd, no signal. Something must  be wrong with the tower."  She noticed Amy looking up at her with concerned blue eyes. She responded by giving her a comforting smile. "Don't worry. We'll

try calling Mommy again in a little while."

          Just then, she heard a loud pounding at the door. Tina, not having received Jane's last worried instructions, began to approach the door. "What the . . . hold on!" she said as she was walking. The pounding stopped and Tina looked through the viewer once she was at the door, but could not see anyone outside. She shrugged and decided to open the door cautiously to further investigate. As she

cracked the door slightly, two large henchmen barged in and one of them seized Tina by the wrists.

Excerpt 4:

          "Lauren, wait!" Jane cried out. Lauren had already stepped out to find that they were in a totally different lab from the one that they were in before they entered the box.

          "Wait . . . where are we? What did you do, Jane?"

          Jane and Petra emerged from the box, Petra more cautiously than Jane. Jane did not immediately recognize the laboratory they arrived in. She looked around and, seeing a portrait of Copernicus mounted on the wall in one corner, was about to investigate further when voices were heard coming from downstairs.

          "The machine! They've arrived!"

Except 5:

            Maggie stopped in her tracks and took a deep breath. She knew that the most reasonable thing to do was to go back inside and notify authorities that she had spotted Anton. Nonetheless, she still wanted to believe anything Anton told her and so unwisely decided to follow him. "All right, just make this quick."

            Of course, Anton did not keep his word and Maggie did not meet her sister at the coffee bar that afternoon. After waiting for her for over half an hour, Nina and her friend panicked and contacted the authorities.
